Large Group Speech Categories

One-Act Play

 

Students perform a short, between twenty and thirty-five minutes, play complete with costumes, set, and lighting. This category is memorized, and the number involvied is contigent upon the piece that is chosen.

 

Musical Theatre

 

For ten minutes, students tell a story through song and dance. No singing or dancing experience is required and there are maximum of six people per Musical Theatre entry.

 

Choral Reading

 

Students band together to tell a story by blending their voices together. This high-energy activity utilizes costumes, props, scripts and the performer's entire body to tell a tale with the help of around fifteen of their closest friends, the ultimate goal is to tell the story as one entity rather than a bunch of individuals.

 

Group Mime

 

No speaking is allowed in this category where students use their body and facial expressions to convey characters and a story. There are a maximum of six people per entry.

 

Solo Mime

 

Same general requirements as Group Mime, but involving one person.

 

TV News Broadcasting

 

In this prerecorded category, students play a DVD of them giving a newscast featuring local and national stories, a commercial, and special interest stories. Cast size fluctuates with the demands of the program.

 

Short Film

 

Challenging students in the fields of writing, directing, editing, acting, and costuming, Short FIlm asks students to make a film less than twenty minutes in length and then play it for the judges on the day of contest. The number of students can be between one and infinity depending upon what the students create.

 

Reader's Theatre

 

Unlike Choral Reading, Reader's Theatre focuses on the students ability to create a character. Between ten and fifteen people create different characters to tell a story with the aid of only their scripts, a few blocks, and themselves.

 

Ensemble Acting

 

Between two and six students bring a short, ten-minute scene to life only being able to use a few chairs, a table, and each other.

 

Group Improvisation

 

A group of two to six students are given a situation and five minutes to create a story and characters to fit that situation. Students are then able to utilize a few chairs and each other to act out what they have come up with.

 

Radio Broadcasting

 

Creating the environment of a real radio broadcast complete with news stories, commercials, and special interest stories, Radio Broadcasting allows students to use their voices to communicate. This pre-recorded activity allows for the students to polish their product before playing it for the judges.
